The community-based approach

Since inception, the Mvula Trust has championed the Community-Based Organisation (CBO) management model of rural development, and has played a pioneering role in developing and testing the model in thousands of projects throughout South Africa.

The community-based approach emphasizes the empowerment of communities to participate in; and manage the planning and implementation of projects in their own communities. Community-based organisations are established and supported to manage projects on behalf of their communities and project participants. Post-project mentorship and support is provided, where necessary, in order to ensure project sustainability.

The CBOs are empowered with skills and capacities to create or access other local economic development (LED) opportunities beyond the project implementation phase. The CBOs manage project implementation and operate project finances in addition to performing community liaison functions. Emphasis is placed on the practical, hands-on training of CBO members who are mentored and provided with remedial training where it is deemed necessary, based on continuous the performance monitoring of individual CBO members.
